Want to do more with your rowing? Find out more about taking part in Regattas...

A list of Regattas can be found here

When you have developed your rowing skills to a competent level, you might want to consider taking part in one of the many Regattas that are held across the south west in the summer months, including Swanage Sea Rowing Club's own Regatta usually held in May or June.

Regattas are a series of races in various categories - Juniors, Men and Women's 'A', 'B' or 'C' teams, Mixed Veterans, Veterans and even Super Veterans. Each category will usually have heats before the final - you will need to train with a crew to compete in races of almost 2 miles of open water which can be physically challenging. This is a tradition which dates back hundreds of years which is enormously popular amongst gig clubs.

Taking part in Regattas is one of the best ways to get the most out ot the Club and provides an opportunity to travel to some of the most picturesque settings in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall and row against other clubs, enjoy the atmosphere and, more often than not, have a few well earned beers after the racing. Members will have to make a contribution towards travelling costs.

Two of the largest events are the Isles of Scilly World Championships which takes place at the end of April, and the Newquay County Gig Championships in September.

Regatta events are organised on an individual basis with members putting their names down to make crews and organising the travel and other arrangements. Other challenging events include The Great River Race in which over 300 boats row 21 miles of the Thames from London to Richmond
